Overton Research Center Winter Pasture Seminar

A Winter Pastures for Central and East Texas workshop will be held August 19, 2011, at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center in Overton. The program is designed to provide information to producers on selection, establishment, and management of winter pastures. Practical suggestions, research results, and the knowledge needed to effectively incorporate winter pastures into your operation will be provided by Dr. Vanessa Corriher, Extension Forage Specialist and Dr. Jason Banta, Extension Beef Cattle Specialist.

Presentations will cover species and variety selection, monthly and seasonal forage production potential, establishment, fertilization, insect control, and estimated costs. An interactive demonstration of USDA web soil survey tool will also be conducted to illustrate how to create a custom soil and production map for your property; this tool can also be used to determine the size of a field or the length of a fence line. Additionally, the program will include discussions on utilization and grazing strategies, transitioning from winter to spring forages, bloat and grass tetany prevention, and appropriate mineral supplementation. Two pesticide CEU’s and 3 beef quality credits will be provided to those who attend. Cost to attend is $60 per person and includes lunch, refreshments, a proceedings book, and a CD with reference materials, including excel spreadsheets to aid in estimating costs.
